Le Mans, n.|lə mɑ̃| [The name of a city in the département of Sarthe in north-west France.] Used colloq. to designate the 24-hour long touring and sports car race held annually at Le Mans since 1923. Also freq. used attrib. to designate a type of race start, originated there, in which the competitors are stationed at a distance from their cars (also transf.).
