1934F. Petrie Measures & Weights 5 Remen (½ of 29·2 in.). The Remen doubled was the diagonal of the square cubit, 29·161 [in.]. 1959Chambers's Encycl. IX. 183/1 The Egyptian royal cubit (20·63 {pm} 0·2 in. or 524 {pm} 5 mm)... From this cubit was formed the double remen, the length of the diagonal of a square with sides equal to the royal cubit. Thus, the double remen was equal to √2 × 20·63 in. (29·16 in., 740·66 mm). This was the basis of the ancient Egyptian land measure. 1969Listener 18 Dec. 859/3 The Royal cubit is √2 Egyptian remens, i.e. the diagonal of a 1×1 remen square. The ‘Megalithic yard’ is thus √5 remens, or the diagonal of a 2×1 remen rectangle. |
