ˈlong-tail 1. a. A long-tailed animal, formerly a dog or horse with the tail uncut; spec. a greyhound. Also attrib. cut and long-tail: see cut ppl. a. 9; fig. in the sense ‘riff-raff’ (cf. quot. a 1700 and bob-tail).
