[a. F. loris (Buffon); said to be a. Du. † loeris booby, clown. Used as a mod.L. generic name (E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire 1796, in Mag. Encycl. I. 48).]
a. A small arboreal primate of the genus so called, distinguished by grey or black fur, large eyes, and thin limbs, and found in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and southern India; also called slender loris.
b. A larger primate of similar form but heavier build, belonging to the genus Nycticebus and found in south-east Asia; also called slow loris.
