▪ I. ‖ zoster|ˈzɒstə(r)| Also 9 zooster. [L., a. Gr. ζωστήρ girdle, f. ζωννύναι to gird.] †1. A kind of seaweed. Obs. rare.
1601Holland Pliny xiii. xxv. I. 401 As for the former [seaweed] called Zoster, it is found among the shelves and shallow waters not farre from the shore. 2. The disease shingles, herpes zoster. Also attrib.
