a. In the Eng. Universities, a certificate that a student is too ill to attend at a lecture or examination. Cf. æger.
1864C. Babbage Philosopher 37, I sent my servant to the apothecary for a thing called an aegrotat, which I understood..meant a certificate that I was indisposed.
b. A degree or pass awarded to a candidate prevented from sitting an examination because of illness; also N. Amer., a credit (sense 13 d) awarded for similar reasons. Also attrib.
