Maffei, n. Astron.|ˈmæfeɪ| [The name of Paolo Maffei (b. 1926), Italian astronomer, who described the galaxies in 1968 (Publ. Astron. Soc. Pacific LXXX. 618).] attrib. and absol. Designating either of two galaxies discovered by Maffei near the galactic equator, which are visible only in red and infrared light. More fully in Maffei 1 and Maffei 2.
1971Astrophysical Jrnl: Lett. CLXIII. l25 Maffei 1 is a nearby elliptical galaxy, probably on the edge of the Local Group. 1983Monthly Notices R. Astron. Soc. CCV. 150 Maffei 1 is probably not a member of the Local Group, but, instead, is a likely member of the nearby Ursa Major-Camelopardalis Cloud. 1985Astrophysical Jrnl. CCXCVII. 566/1 This value of the column density was used in the flux determination for source 4 (which is probably associated with the Maffei galaxy). 1993Astron. Oct. 58/2 Instead of producing thousands of nearly identical M 31 images each year, astro-imagers are now imaging Maffei I, NGC 520.., and NGC 2683. 1993Astrophysical Jrnl. CDXIV. 122/2 The emission peaks in Maffei 2 and IC 342 are displaced 25–50 pc from the nuclei. |
