ˌAnte-Coˈmmunion In full Ante-Communion Service [ante- B. 2], a popular term for that part of the Communion Service in the Book of Common Prayer which extends from the beginning of the office to ‘the end of the general Prayer ‘For the whole state of Christ's Church militant here in earth’’ and is appointed to be said ‘upon the Sundays and other Holy-days (if there be no Communion)’. According to the American rite, the Ante-Communion ends with the Gospel.
1827Gentl. Mag. XCVII. ii. 487 There was no offertory, and no prayer for the church militant. I am not aware by what authority this part of the Ante-Communion Service is now so commonly omitted on Sundays. 1871F. G. Lee Dict. Ritual Terms, Ante-Communion. (1) An Anglican term used to designate that portion of the Liturgy or Communion service which, commencing with the Introit, or the Lord's Prayer, closes with the end of the Nicene Creed.
