maquette|mæˈkɛt| [Fr. (1752), ad. It. macchietta speck, little spot, dim. of macchia spot, f. macchiare to spot, stain, f. L. maculāre; cf. maculate v.] A small preliminary model, in wax or clay, etc., or a preliminary painted sketch, from which a work in sculpture is elaborated. Also transf. and fig.
