Masham|ˈmæʃəm| The name of a small town in the northern part of Yorkshire, used to designate a breed of sheep produced by crossing Wensleydale or Teeswater rams with Blackface or Swaledale ewes.
1951A. Fraser Sheep Husbandry (ed. 2) ii. 68 The Wensleydale..is pre-eminently a crossing breed... It provides sires to cross with the hill breeds of sheep indigenous to the North of England... The cross lambs thus produced are variously known as ‘Mashams’—Half-breds—or Greyfaces, and are very useful lambs for feeding on low ground. 1971Farmers' Weekly 19 Mar. 43/3 Certain wool types such as Blackface..have met a better market demand than..Masham. |
