maturase, n. Biochem.|ˈmætjʊreɪz| [a. F. maturase (coined by C. Jacq et al. 1980, in Compt. Rend. D CCXC. 90): see mature a., -ase.] Any of a group of enzymes which catalyse the excision of introns from mRNA, and may themselves be coded for by intronic sequences.
1980Nature 20 Nov. 211/2 A different mediator of splicing was proposed by P. Slonimski..for the transcript of the yeast mitochondrial gene for cytochrome b. He proposes that certain introns are spliced out with the help of proteins (‘maturases’) encoded in the introns themselves. 1981Ibid. 5 Feb. 440/1 Two further observations make it clear that maturase is a chimaeric protein, containing the first 143 amino acid residues of cytochrome b fused to the I2 reading frame. 1986Current Genetics XI. 55/2 This action of an intron encoded maturase on the splicing of another intron located in a different gene could represent an interesting control mechanism between two enzymes of the same biochemical pathway. |
