‖ meloe Ent.|ˈmɛləʊiː| [mod.L. Meloē (see quot. 1650), of unknown origin; applied by Linnæus as a generic name. Paracelsus Op. (1603) III. 220 has (in a prescription) a genitive melloes, which Mouffet interprets as identical with this word. Cf. melolontha.] The typical genus of the family Meloïdæ; an insect of this genus, an oil-beetle.
