methapyrilene n. Pharm.|mɛθəˈpɪrɪliːn| [f. meth- + -a- + alteration of pyr(id)yl s.v. pyridine n. + -ene.] A bicyclic pyridine derivative which was formerly used as an antihistamine agent and in sleeping aids; dimethyl-2-(N-2-pyridyl-N-2-thenylamino)ethylamine, C14H19N3S .

Therapeutics VII. 832/2 Double blind studies in asthmatic children revealed that an antihistamine drug, methapyrilene hydrochloride, enhanced the effect of the bronchodilator drug. 1974M. C. Gerald Pharmacol. ii. 20 Nonprescription..sleep-facilitating products,..have capitalized on the drowsiness induced by methapyrilene. 1979Tucson (Arizona) Citizen 20 Sept. 2e/1 HEW officials felt that a recall of these products which contain methapyrilene would be ‘an appropriate action’. Methapyrilene has been shown to be cancerous when fed to test animals. |
