ˈmire-snipe Sc. [f. mire n.1 + snipe: cf. ON. mýri-snípa (Edda Gl.).] The common snipe, Scolopax gallinago. Also in phr. to catch a mire-snipe, to fall in the mire; hence fig. an accident, mishap (Jam.).
