a. Any compound having a single (primary, secondary, or tertiary) amine group in its molecule, spec. one which is a neurohormone; = monamine.

Comb. monoamine oxidase, the enzyme or group of enzymes that brings about the oxidation (and consequent inactivity) of monoamines in the body; monoamine oxidase inhibitor, any of a class of drugs which inhibit the functioning of monoamine oxidase (so allowing accumulation of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain), some of which are used as antidepressants.
