propham|ˈprəʊfæm| [f. propyl + phenyl + carbamate.] Isopropyl N-phenylcarbamate, C6H5·NH·CO·O·CH(CH3)2, a white crystalline substance used as a selective herbicide to control weeds among crops, esp. during germination.
1955Proc. Brit. Weed Control Conf. 1954 I. 183 The almost complete failure of the more insoluble propham, CIPC and CMU to give control of wild oats may also be connected with the inability of the material to reach the wild oats at the critical time at Site I, where TCA was successful. 1958Weed Control Handbk. (Brit. Weed Control Council) i. 19 For the control of wild oats in sugar beet and peas, propham has given results comparable with those obtained with trichloroacetic acid when applied in the same way—before the final seed-bed cultivations. 1973Ashton & Crafts Mode of Action of Herbicides xiii. 202 Propham is rapidly broken down by micro⁓organisms in the soil; such degradation is promoted by warmth and moisture. For this reason propham has proved most useful in cool season crops. |
