[OE. morᵹenᵹifu, f. morᵹen morn, morrow + ᵹifu gift, yeve; corresponding to OHG. *morgangeba (morganegiba in Gregory of Tours, 6th c.); cf. the synonymous MHG. morgengâbe, mod.G. morgengabe, morgengift.] The gift made by the husband to the wife on the morning after the consummation of the marriage. Also sometimes misused for dowry. Also fig. Cf. morning-gift.
