‖ muscari|mʌˈskɛərɪ, -raɪ| Also 6 muscarie, 7 (?) muscaris, 8 muscaria, 7–8 muscary. [mod.L. muscari, given by Clusius 1601 as one of the names by which the plant was known at Constantinople. It would seem therefore to represent a mod.Gr. *µοσκάρι, dim. of µόσκος musk: the flowers have a musk-like odour. Clusius says that another name was muschoromi or muscurimi (? µόσκος ρωµαῖος ‘Roman musk’), and that (in Italy) some called it muschio greco.] A genus of bulbous plants belonging to the hyacinth tribe of Liliaceæ; a plant of this genus, esp. Muscari botryoides, the grape hyacinth.
