Nicene, a. (and n.)|ˈnaɪsiːn, naɪˈsiːn| Also 6 Nycene, Nicæne, Nicen. Cf. Isnik. [ad late L. Nīcēn-us, Nīcæn-us, f. Nīcēa, Nīcæa, Gr. νίκαια, the name of a town in Bithynia.] 1. a. Nicene Council, one or other of two ecclesiastical Councils held at Nicæa, the first in the year 325 for the purpose of dealing with the Arian controversy, and the second in 787 to consider the question of images.
