Pl. nielli and niellos.
[It. niello:—pop. L. *nigellum, neut. of L. nigellus, dim. of niger black: cf. Prov. and Sp. niel, OF. neel (mod.F. nielle from It.).]
1. A black composition, consisting of alloys of silver, lead, copper, and sulphur, with which engraved designs on silver or other metals are filled in, so as to produce an ornamental effect.
