[a. L. aphæresis, a. Gr. ἀϕαίρεσις a taking away, n. of action f. ἀϕαιρέ-ειν, f. ἀϕ' = ἀπό off, away + αἱρέ-ειν to take, snatch. The Latin grammarians gave it the transf. sense.]
