‖ Proˈpontis Also 7 Propontey. [L., a. Gr. προποντίς the Sea of Marmora, lit. the ‘Fore-sea’, f. πρό, pro-2 2 (a) + πόντος a sea, spec. the Euxine.] The ancient name of the Sea of Marmora; also transf. a narrow channel (obs.).
