apophyge Arch.|əˈpɒfɪdʒiː| [a. Gr. ἀποϕυγή ‘escape,’ hence ‘the curve with which the shaft escapes into the base or capital,’ f. ἀπο-ϕεύγειν to flee away. In L. apophygis, mod.Fr. apophyge; hence better ˈæpəʊfɪdʒ.] The part of a column where it springs out of its base, or joins its capital, usually moulded into a concave sweep or cavetto.
