Gr. σαῦρος lizard], a lizard of the genus Ophiosaurus or family Ophiosauridæ, limbless and of snake-like form; a glass-snake; so ophioˈsaurian (used in quot. 1882 for a hypothetical reptile combining the characteristics of a lizard and a snake).
