orcinol|ˈɔːsɪnɒl| [f. orcin + -ol 2.] A colourless crystalline substance (C7H8O2 + H2O) obtained from the various kinds of orchilla-weed, turning red, brown, or yellow, in contact with air or when treated with various compounds, which gives a purple colour with ribose and is used in estimating nucleic acids.
