orp, v. Sc. [Origin obscure: cf. ON. verpa to throw, pa. pple. orpin thrown: cf. Sc. thrawn in sense ‘cross-grained, perverse, ill-humoured’.] intr. To fret, to murmur discontentedly; ‘to weep with a convulsive pant’ (Glossary to Ramsay).
1725Ramsay Gent. Sheph. i. ii, Like dawted wean..That for some feckless whim will orp and greet. 1836M. Mackintosh Cottager's Dau. 191 They bood aye keep the neath⁓most in, To orp wi' grief. Hence ˈorping vbl. n., fretting, murmuring; ˈorpit ppl. a., fretful, discontented.
