1959T. Harrison World Within i. 59 The rapid spread of the palang, a cross-piece driven through the male penis, has shown that behind the easy acceptance of many upland women there is a readiness to react in a more elaborate and erotic manner. 1964Jrnl. Malaysian Branch R. Asiatic Soc. XXXVII. 163, I have here chosen the term palang as the most widespread of the indigenous Bornean terms (cf. utang, etc.) and also the one known over parts of the outside world. Ibid. 164 It is safest to take the people nowadays called Kayans and some of the Kenyahs closely associated with them as the main west Borneo palang users in proto-historical times. 1974S. E. Morison European Discovery of America: Southern Voyages xvii. 422 The gentle Limasawans, says Pigafetta, went about nearly naked... Here, and at Cebu, he describes a sexual practice known as palang. ‘The males, large and small, have their penis pierced from one side to the other near the head, with a gold or tin bolt as large as a goose quill. In each end of the bolt some have what resembles a star, with points; others are like the head of a cast nail... In the middle of the bolt is a hole, through which they urinate’. Ibid. 435 Although certain writers..have either omitted this story or called it one of Pigafetta's tall tales, palang did exist. It persists to this day in Borneo and parts of the Philippines. |
