1944Hyde & Williams Let. 15 July in Pollen Analysis Circular 28 Oct. 6 We would therefore suggest palynology..: the study of pollen and other spores and their dispersal, and applications thereof. We venture to hope that the sequence of consonants p-l-n, (suggesting pollen, but with a difference) and the general euphony of the new word may commend it to our fellow workers in this field. 1944H. A. Hyde in Museums Jrnl. XLIV. 146/1 In view of the admitted inadequacy of the expression pollen analysis it has recently been proposed to substitute for it the new word palynology (Gk. παλύνω (paluno), I scatter; πάλη (pale), meal): the study of pollens and other plant spores and their dispersal, and applications thereof. 1946Svensk Bot.
