palæencephalon Anat.|ˌpæ-, ˌpeɪliːɛnˈsɛfələn| Also (chiefly U.S.) paleencephalon. [a. G. palaeencephalon (L. Edinger Vorlesungen über den Bau der nervösen Zentralorgane des Menschen und der Tiere (ed. 7, 1908) II. xvi. 241): see palæo-, paleo- b and encephalon.] The phylogenetically older portion of the brain, as contrasted with the neencephalon.
