ˈpampas-ˌgrass [f. pampa] The popular name of a gigantic grass, Cortaderia selloana, having ample silky panicles of silvery hue borne on stalks rising to the height of twelve or fourteen feet; a native of South America, whence it was introduced into Europe in 1843 as an ornament of lawns and shrubberies.
