A Tibetan Buddhist title of respect, applied esp. to the lama of Tashi Lhunpo, who is held to be the reincarnation of Buddha Amitbha and is next in importance to the Dalai Lama, being styled the Panchen Lama or Panchen Rinpoche (rinpoche = precious, jewel). Cf. Rinpoche.
