A black, lustrous, fine-grained mixture of vanadium sulphides that occurs in Peru and is exploited as a source of vanadium.
1906F. Hewett in Engin. & Mining Jrnl. LXXXII. 385 There was discovered, on Nov. 20, 1905, in the neighborhood of Cerro de Pasco, Peru, a new material containing vanadium... The material..was taken to Señor Antenor Riza Patron, metallurgist of the Huaraucacar smelter, nine miles from Cerro de Pasco... It is suggested, in appreciation of the work of the discoverer of the material, Señor Antenor Riza Patron, that it be given the name ‘patronite’. 1922Amer. Jrnl. Sci. CCIII. 200 The real patronite is a black mineral of fine grain and metallic luster. In polished section it is shown to consist of a very fine-grained mixture of three minerals. 1946J. R.
