A kind of lace of thread or silk, for trimming the edges of garments: also called pearling-lace. In pl. pearlings, edgings of this lace; also transf. clothes trimmed with it.

1. a. Seeking or fishing for pearls. Also attrib.
1639Sc. Acts Chas. I (1817) V. 259/1 The patent..to James Bannatyne for the peirling. Ibid. 261/1 The article against Mr. Mellwillis patent of pearling. 1886Pall Mall G. 25 Aug. 11/1 Their rations consist of only a little flour when they are engaged in pearling. 1887Standard 30 Apr. 5/2 The most important of the Australian pearling grounds.
b. pearling lugger (see quot. 1948).
1924G. H. P. Muhlhauser Cruise of Amaryllis v. 233 A fair number of Australian ‘black fellows’ are to be found among the crews of the pearling ‘luggers’, as they are called, though really ketches. 1930Mariner's Mirror XVI. 192 The pearling ‘luggers’ of the Torres Straits are usually ketch-rigged. 1948R. de Kerchove Internat.
