pemphis|ˈpɛmfɪs| [mod.L. (J. R. & J. G. A. Forster Characteres Generum Plantarum (1776) 67), f. Gr. πεµϕίς cloud.] A small tree of the genus so called, esp. Pemphis acidula, belonging to the family Lythraceæ, and found in coastal, tropical areas of Africa and Southern Asia.
