† ˈpenancer Obs. [a. OF. penean-, penancier, in both senses (13th c. in Godef.), ad. med.L. pœnitēntiāri-us (Du Cange): see penitentiary.] 1. One who imposes penance; spec. a priest specially appointed to hear confession and impose penance in extraordinary cases, a penitentiary. (See also penitencer.)
