OF. penoncel (= It. pennoncello, ‘a little plume or bunch of feathers, also a little streamer or banderoll’ (Florio), med.L. penuncellus, penonsellus, Du Cange), dim. of penon, pennon. See also the reduced form pencel, which is found earlier.] A small pennon borne upon a helmet or lance, a pencel; a pennon or pendant of a ship.
