‖ periostracum Zool.|pɛrɪˈɒstrəkəm| [mod.L., f. Gr. περί around + ὄστρακον shell of a mussel, etc.] The outer horny covering of the shell of a mollusc or brachiopod. Hence periˈostracal a., pertaining to the periostracum.
