a. Any of a class of artificial zeolites which are widely employed as ion-exchangers, esp. for the softening of water.
b. Written Permutit or permutit |-ɪt|. A proprietary name for ion-exchange materials and equipment utilizing such zeolites. Also attrib., as permutit(e) process, the softening of water by treatment with any of these substances.
