An inseparable formative element in names of compounds which contain the group {b1}O·C6H5, as in pheˌnoxyaˈcetic (or phenoxacetic) acid, a colourless, crystalline solid, C6H5O·CH2COOH; also, any of the chlorinated derivatives of this, which are widely used as weedkillers; pheˌnoxymethylpeniˈcillin a white powder, 6-phenoxyacetamidopenicillanic acid, C16H18N2O5S, which is a semisynthetic penicillin.
