phosvitin, n. Biochem.|fɒsˈvaɪtɪn| [f. phospho- + vitellus n. + -in1.] The predominant phosphoprotein present in the vitellus.
1949Mecham & Olcott in Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. LXXI. 3670/1 A phosphoprotein preparation containing 10{pcnt} phosphorus has been isolated from egg yolk in yield sufficient to account for at least 60{pcnt} of the total protein phosphorus in yolk. The proposed name ‘phosvitin’ indicates both its high phosphorus content and its source in the egg yolk. 1977J.
