a. Chem. The initiation of a reaction by light acting on a suitable photosensitizer.
1924H. S. Taylor Treat. Physical Chem. II. xviii. 1241 Uranium salts are positive catalysts for the photoreaction, presumably by photo-sensitization. 1933Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. LV. 587 A maximum of twenty per cent. photosensitization to visible light was found for the polymerization among seventy organic substances tried. 1974D. R. Arnold et al. Photochem. vi. 133 Photosensitization involves the absorption of radiation by a strongly absorbing substance, the photosensitizer and its collisional transfer to another substance which is non-absorbing at the same wavelength.
