Surgical removal or destruction of a section of a phrenic nerve, formerly carried out as an alternative to phrenicotomy.

Treatm. xxviii. 381 Phrenicectomy is used as an adjuvant to other types of collapse therapy—as an independent measure where artificial pneumothorax has failed owing to adhesions, and as a palliative for hæmoptysis, harassing cough, vomiting, or pain due to diaphragmatic adhesions. 1957E. H. Hudson in F. R. G. Heaf Symposium of Tuberculosis vii. 381 Stuertz of Cologne is credited as the first to perform phrenicectomy as a therapeutic measure in the treatment of brochiectosis of the lower lobe of the lung in 1911. |
