phrenicotomy Surg.|frɛnɪˈkɒtəmɪ| [f. phrenic a. (n.) + -o + -tomy.] Surgical cutting of a phrenic nerve, so as to paralyse the diaphragm on the same side.
1913Internat. Abstr. Surg. XVII. 417/2 Oehlecker..performed the phrenicostomy [sic] in three cases. 1926Encycl. Brit. III. 691/1 Phrenicotomy (division of the phrenic nerve in the neck) is said to paralyse the corresponding half of the diaphragm; it is sometimes practised in conjunction with other means of putting one lung at rest. 1950J. K. Berman Princ. & Pract. Surg. viii. 231 Compression of the lung is best secured by the subperiosteal resection of ribs over the affected side. Should symptoms persist after pneumothorax and phrenicotomy, thoracoplasty may be used. 1974Jrnl. Appl. Physiol.
