[a. Ger. Pietist, f. L. pietās piety + -ist. Applied in derision to the followers of Spener, in reference to the collegia pietatis, or unions for mutual religious edification, formed by them, and adopted at Leipsic, c 1690, by some of Francke's congregation.]
