The name in Shetland, Orkney, and Caithness of the coal-fish, Merlangus carbonarius, in its second year.
1793Statist. Acc. Scot. V. 190 Piltocks, sillocks, haddocks, mackarels, and flounders, are got immediately upon the shore. 1822Hibbert Descr. Shetl. Isl. 119 About the month of May ensuing, they are found to have grown from 8 to 15 inches, acquiring during this period of their growth the name of Piltocks. 1883J.
