[ad. L. pinno-, pĭnotērēs (-thērēs), a. Gr. πιννοτήρης (Aristoph. Wasps 1510), f. πῖνα, πίννα Pinna1 + τηρεῖν to guard. The L. variant pīnothērēs, as if f. Gr. θηρᾶν to hunt, was adopted as the generic name by Latreille 1807, whence F. pinnotère, pinnothère.]
Any of the small crabs of the genus Pinnotheres, which commensally inhabit the shells of various bivalves, as oysters and mussels; a pea-crab.
