plasmalemma Biol.|ˈplæzməlɛmə| Pl. -lemmas, -lemmæ. [f. plasma + lemma2.] The thin membrane immediately surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell, which restricts the passage of molecules into it.
1923[see plasmagel]. 1931J. Q. Plowe in Protoplasma XII. 202 Mast (1924) has given us the term ‘plasmalemma’... It has seemed permissible..to extend its use to the botanical world, and to employ it to denote a distinct, differentiated layer on the outer surface of the plant protoplast. 1965K. Esau Plant Anat. (ed. 2) ii. 15 Surface membranes delimit the cytoplasm from the wall (plasma membrane, plasmalemma, or ectoplast) and from the vacuole (vacuolar membrane, or tonoplast). 1965,1970[see plasma membrane s.v. plasma 6 a]. 1970Austral. Jrnl. Bot. XVIII. 285 Host plasmalemmae are invaginated by invading hyphae, and encapsulations are formed. 1971Proc. R. Soc. B. CLXXVIII. 195 (caption) The plasmalemmas..of the two cells. 1976Nature 9 Sept. 158/2 We report..a gradual increase in microviscosity of protoplast plasmalemma from petals of ageing rose flowers. Hence ˈplasmalemmal a., of, pertaining to, or formed from a plasmalemma.
