单词 plasmasphere
释义 plasmasphere|ˈplæzməsfɪə(r)|
[f. plasma + sphere n.]
The roughly toroidal region surrounding the earth at latitudes away from the poles in which there is a relatively dense plasma of low-energy electrons and protons that is thought to rotate with the earth; an analogous region around another planet. Cf. plasmapause.
1966D. L. Carpenter in Jrnl. Geophysical Res. LXXI. 695/1 With regard to nomenclature, the word ‘plasma⁓pause’ will be used when the three-dimensionality of the knee phenomenon is emphasized... The word ‘plasma⁓sphere’ will be used to indicate the dense region inside the plasmapause, and ‘plasma trough’ to indicate the tenuous region outside.1971New Scientist 1 July 8/1 The work..led to this detection of the Jovian plasmasphere from the now well-known modulation of Jupiter's radio emission caused by Io.1974McGraw-Hill Yearbk. Sci. & Technol. 345/2 The characteristic changes in size and shape of the plasmasphere which are observed by satellites and by ground-based vlf measurements have a direct effect on the dynamics of the F region of the ionosphere and on the location of regions of wave turbulence in the outer magnetosphere.
Hence plasmaˈspheric a.
1974Nature 29 Mar. 401/1 He II λ303 Å emissions will be incident on the night-time upper atmosphere, arising from resonance scattering of the solar helium lines..by plasmaspheric He+ ions.1978Ibid. 26 Jan. 310/2 Inside the plasmasphere the characteristic emission is a featureless ‘plasmaspheric hiss’ which effectively fills the high density region but is believed to be generated by cyclotron resonant interactions with >30 keV electrons near the outer edge of the plasmasphere.
