Plateau, n.2 Math. (ˈplætəʊ, ‖ pləto) The name of J. A. F. Plateau (1801–83), Belgian physicist, used attrib., in the possessive, and with of to designate the problem of finding the surface of smallest area bounded by any given closed curve.
1911Encycl. Brit. XXVI. 123/2 The problem of finding a minimal surface to pass through a given curve in space, known as Plateau's problem, possesses an exceptional interest. 1927Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. XXXIII. 259 This paper reduces the Plateau problem to a system of two integral equations. 1930Math. Zeitschr. XXXII. 765 The problem of Plateau and the problem of least area have a common solution. 1976Sci. Amer. July 82/3 In his honour an entire range of mathematical questions that deal with the geometry of soap-bubble-like and soap-film-like surfaces is referred to as Plateau's problem. |
