combining forms of Gr. πλείων (poet. πλέων), πλεῖον, more, compar. of πολύς, -ύ, much; see poly-. Plio-, which follows Latin spelling, is chiefly used in generic names and their derivatives, as Pliosaurus, Pliosaurian.
